Too Sweet

At work we are promoting a showing of The Shining at a nearby Jail on Friday the 13th. My design idea wasn't exactly scary but I enjoyed illustrating anyway. I'm going to rent this movie, because it's probably been about 10 years since I've seen it and i'm super intrigued.

Emma the Illustrator

Many Illustrators start out doing freelance work, as I know many designers and artists do as well, and Emma Lofstrom is a true inspiration. Her work has been featured in such magazines as Wallpaper*, Dazed, in countless exhibitions throughout London and her home of Sweden and recently a collaboration in illustrating cookbooks. Just found her work to be so detailed and colorful, so whimsical and fanciful.

Art is for sharing not keeping for yourself. The more people your work can speak to the more powerful it becomes. Let it fall out of your hands and into the minds of others. You can't own it, you can only create it -Hisham Bharoocha

I welcome these incredible Artist Music Journals with open arms.
p.s. I have finally emailed you some photos ; )
Best of luck with the project! I can't wait to see. xo

Potential Ink

If I were ballsy enough, I would ink my skin with a few of these elements like the skull or wolf or bird. But alas! I am not. The last romance, Future Primitive and Nevermind are the titles of these incredible illos done by Rik Lee.

Book Boner Part Two

Aron Mörel has really cool hair, a generous smile, good taste in whisky and publishes lovely books. Mörel Books is based in London and specializes in affordable art books and zines. Mörel works in close collaboration with the artists and the quality of this partnership is naturally apparent in each book. One of my favorites is Some British Birds by Edwyn Collins, who after having two strokes, lost control of the right side of his body. His daily journal of bird illustrations show a gentle progression of learning to render with his left hand. I love the smudges and the soulful expressions of the birds.

oh, Kareena.

I used to bump into this spectacular lady in the lift while working in Sydney, and recently saw her work at The Finders Keepers Design Market. Kareena is as sweet as her illustrations are beautiful. Check out more work here and perhaps even own your very own piece here.

Drawings of Newcastle

King Street Sculpture

Lambton Pool

Newcastle Council Building

Tyrone Road Trolly

Trevor Dickinson
is a Newcastle based illustrator who draws iconic buildings and your basic around-town staples ( like grocery store carts, called Trollys, which seem to roam the streets everywhere - is this universal?) in a really sweet and endearing way. Those who are familiar with Newcastle will find this flickr site quite relevant and cute. And for those of you who are yet to visit Newcastle, hopefully it draws a nice picture for you. ;)

MACHIKO

Japanese illustrations are becoming fast and furious, my favorite kind of illustration. Still a huge spot in my heart for cutting and pasting , Machiko does some beautiful pieces.

Oh, Charley.

I am sure you're familiar with Charley Harper's work, but for those who stumble and find themselves here, I do hope this makes you light up and smile. Charley has an unmistakable minimal and vibrant style that I have come to adore.

When once asked to describe his art style, Harper replied, "When I look at a wildlife or nature subject, I don’t see the feathers in the wings, I just count the wings. I see exciting shapes, color combinations, patterns, textures, fascinating behavior and endless possibilities for making interesting pictures. I regard the picture as an ecosystem in which all the elements are interrelated, interdependent, perfectly balanced, without trimming or unutilized parts; and herein lies the lure of painting; in a world of chaos, the picture is one small rectangle in which the artist can create an ordered universe."

His books and any work you may be able to fill a wall or room with come highly recommended. So simple and beautiful - simple geometry in nature. Divine.

Golden

Jing Wei is currently living in a treehouse in Brooklyn, illustrating the cutest pictures and making me laugh out loud with the top seals image - ahh, golden girls. She also has a blog which is adorable.

For Dana

Monster Children is a magazine published in Sydney whose reputation for rad art, sexy garb and scene quality is pretty hot. Check out their site for more hilarity and some great links.

Foxy

I have been a huge fan of Alyson Fox's illustrations for some time, and as of late I have been wanting so badly to go back to my colouring pencil and mylar tracing ways. I think this will help fuel my night.
