oh, Kareena.

I used to bump into this spectacular lady in the lift while working in Sydney, and recently saw her work at The Finders Keepers Design Market. Kareena is as sweet as her illustrations are beautiful. Check out more work here and perhaps even own your very own piece here.

She Wore Her Watercolours Into The Ocean

She flew from the mountains of Roundup, MT to visit the sunshine and the seashore. It had been four years since I last saw my dear friend Coila. With hazy eyes grinning and a cup of dd coffee we made our way to the east coast to see the sunrise. It was so beautiful to watch the light expand as Colia layerd colored sea-water into her journal. She left me the mountains and took home the sea.

Drawings of Newcastle

King Street Sculpture

Lambton Pool

Newcastle Council Building
Tyrone Road Trolly

Trevor Dickinson
is a Newcastle based illustrator who draws iconic buildings and your basic around-town staples ( like grocery store carts, called Trollys, which seem to roam the streets everywhere - is this universal?) in a really sweet and endearing way. Those who are familiar with Newcastle will find this flickr site quite relevant and cute. And for those of you who are yet to visit Newcastle, hopefully it draws a nice picture for you. ;)

Teeth as jewellery?

What are your thoughts? Repulsive or worthy of wearing around? I mean, would anyone in their right mind fuck with you if you were wearing ANY of these? Polly Van Der Glas is a Melbourne based artist who hand makes these sterling silver pieces with human teeth and hair. I love how she says " Teeth are particularly difficult to come by, so any donations are gratefully accepted." Wowza.

YAWN.

Yawns have usually been associated with boredom, stress, nervousness or simply being tired but in fact there is no real solid reason for why we do it.
A characteristic of an empathetic person - you may yawn after seeing someone else yawn, depending on how much you are capable of appreciating other people's physiological state.
Perhaps your body is simply regulating its brain temperature, drawing in a deep breath to cool off the brain. Rats, Cats, Dogs, Snakes, Penguins and Baboons all yawn to display dominance, anger, or even to get down and make some babies.
Yawns are incredibly contagious - perhaps you've even yawned just by simply reading this.

YAWN is an exercise in executing an idea. Capturing a yawn was to capture someone's vulnerability; an intimate, distorted portrait which finds us looking quite the opposite of bored.

The exhibition is on from November 27 - December 31 at Auld and Grey and then will go on to The View Factory from January 4 - January 31 in Newcastle.

I will be making a micro-site for the exhibition soon and will keep you posted...there are 21 portraits in total. Enjoy.

Experiences that nourish children's creative thinking skills are at serious risk in the Florida school system, as budgets for Art Education have been drastically cut and are expected to be worse for 2010. How do we fix this? With a stimulus of creative people!

As you already know from this blog, I love photography! I see it as a powerful tool that keeps us aware of our surroundings and ourselves through exploration and experience. Not to mention that it has become a more accessible technology that is easy to learn. Therefore, it can be used as means to get kids to actively explore the world around them and express themselves. I know I am not alone in this endeavor. There are several organizations out there that believe in this too. And so we start local...

A few months ago I approached my friend Refmann, who is a middle school history teacher in Orange county, FL, and asked him if he thought his kids would be into a photography workshop that would teach them how to create a visual narrative using photos. He replied "that sounds really cool" and with his amazing support for the project, the first Photography As A Sixth Sense Workshop came to fruition. I had the pleasure of spending time with a group of middle schoolers who proved to be enthusiastic learners and immensely creative young photographers. I wanted the workshop to go on another two weeks and I think they did too : ) Above are a few of my favorite photos from each student. I will have a website up next week with the complete narratives.

Cat Power

I was bored and decided to google James Franco ( as you do), and I stumbled across this heavy article about how the shirt he wears in Pineapple Express is the exact design of this company called WOWCH. They're a bit pissed about it all, and you can read more about it here but I suggest you go straight to the meow-riffic pieces of artwork.

Unicorns are lucky

b
Summer is around the bend, and I've decided to toss my bulky jewellery and opt for more elegant, smaller pieces with a tint of antique and colour. Sea Unicorn on etsy has helped me kick start with a beautiful collection. Great styling on her page, too.

The Small Stakes

I remember showing you Jason Munn's website last year, The Small Stakes, and I still go back to him when I need small inspiration. The top three are obviously his, and the bottom one is a design I did for a friend. So many great posters done for so many great bands.

Seduction

I am in love with In Fiore's line of perfume amulets. Yes, these Victorian and Arabic inspired adornments carry a precious cloth saturated with perfume that diffuses layers of fragrance as the pendent warms the against the body. Their ingredients are all organic, biodynamic, or wildcrafted. I have been wearing the Rose Noir solid that has lasted me over a year and is described as "Intoxicating, like a fresh summer garden after the rain". Yep, that's exactly what I smell like.

p.s. they are kinda expensive but the solid perfume compacts are an amazing deal ; )

Luscious Labels

Australians love their wine. A bit of an understatement, but I'll speak plainly here and let the labels from Killibinbin help me when i say that most of us are so swamped with wines, sometimes you just need one to reach out and grab you. I saw this label the other day and decided I HAD to purchase this wine, if only for the labels.

Danny and Julia

My grandparents met in the Bronx when they were 19. She was wearing a red dress. He always says "she was walking around like she had lost something, turns out it was me she was looking for."

Today is their 61st Anniversary

He still uses my Return of the Jedi juice cup that I loved when I was 3

She cooks the best chicken and rice.

He likes to invent things

and fix things

 They love this tree

They sing in Spanish

and always make us laugh

Te quiero mucho mucho

Hand Knitten

Kate Jenkins is a crochete artist from Brighton whose philosophy is that anything can be created from yarn as long as it is made with love. I think it's plain hilarious. Check out some more of her work here.

Book Boner

A Shimmer of Possibility
Inspired by the short stories of Anton Chekhov

Chekhov's six principles that make a good story:

1.  absence of lengthy verbiage of a political-social-economic nature
2.  total objectivity
3.  truthful descriptions of persons and objects
4.  extreme brevity
5.  audacity and originality: flee the stereotype
6.  compassion

A Dictionary Story

"When it comes to typography language always comes first. This might seem like a fairly obvious statement to make but to find this harmony between content and form is incredible hard."

If I could only feel the weight, smell the ink and glue, listen to the subtle crackle open. Guess I will have to make my own. ; )
