I keep on falling...

I recently came across FALLEN, a Melbourne based piece of beauty, and have fallen pretty hard. The pages are filled with amazing photography, creative genii and textured stock paper, like mylar and what feels like silk. I purchased two back issues today and look forward to my little package in the post. Oh. and how good is the logo.

Emma the Illustrator

Many Illustrators start out doing freelance work, as I know many designers and artists do as well, and Emma Lofstrom is a true inspiration. Her work has been featured in such magazines as Wallpaper*, Dazed, in countless exhibitions throughout London and her home of Sweden and recently a collaboration in illustrating cookbooks. Just found her work to be so detailed and colorful, so whimsical and fanciful.

Native Australiana

In Australia there is an incredibly rich and beautiful culture of its original inhabitants. Over the past few years I have been fortunate to learn more about the Aboriginal culture and although there are some very sad aspects there are also some strong and powerful ones as well.

I have paired Samantha Harris, a gorgeous Australian model of Aboriginal nationality, with some work found on The Artery, a gallery in Sydney that is "devoted to showcasing Sydney’s most unique and exciting contemporary Aboriginal art." I am saving up for one of the pieces and am sorry I have waited so long to share this art with you.

Just Kids

Patti Smith arrived in New York City July 3, 1967. Homeless yet hopeful, waiting and searching for her blue star.

New York is the thing that seduced me, New York is the thing that formed me, New York is the thing that deformed me, New York is the thing that perverted me, New York is the thing that converted me. New York is the thing I love. - PS 1971

It was the summer she met Robert Mapplethorpe, the love of her life.

Tropicália

Caetano Veloso, Brazilian political activist/songwriter & musician, is making my summer even hotter. I have been looking up translations for every possible song from this amazing collection of albums from 1968-1972. I want to know the poetry I am dancing around the house and shaking my ass to. So far very moving and beautiful.

The Female Gaze is Upon Herself

The Countess of Castiglione, 2005

The Countess of Castiglione, 1860

I am currently designing a catalog for an exhibtion at Steven Kasher gallery, entitled Inspired, curated by Beth Rudin DeWoody. This photo is my favorite so far, Len Prince & Jessie Mann's 2005 interpretation of Pierre-Louis Pierson's The Countess of Castiglione, c. 1860.

The Countess, Virginia Oldoini, was a visionary. Like most women in court, she had portraits taken. However, she became a bit obsessed and thought of it more as an artistic performance, a play she set the stage for. She directed the shoots with Pierre-Louis in which she re-created imporatnt scenes of her life; experimenting with props and fulfilling her own fantasy of the female gaze through the act of photography. 700 different photographs were created.

Maybe Lady Gaga should be taking more photos of herself and not making music?

Orange Flush.

These are a small series of photos taken by myself and the luminous Jaime Brassil. It was a little competition we entered together for Oyster Magazine, and the theme was .. um .. orange;) I would love to do this again.
